The Gabriola skirt, new from Sewaholic, a lovely sweeping maxi. I was thinking of something to wear to an opera, something to wear with my Tokyo jacket. Helene at Stitch 56 is having a Gabriola competition at the end of the Gabriola sew-along. This is my entry. You can vote for me between 2 and 4 April on the Stitch 56 website here 🙂
These photos are taken at the entrance to the Ottoman restaurant where we had a fabulous dinner on the weekend, one of our many lovely wedding presents.
At first I was thinking of a velvet skirt, but when I couldn’t find any, I got some orange velour. Well, I can tell you it’s not a substitute for velvet. Half-way through making the skirt, it was a disaster. I really should go with the recommended fabrics! Being a knit, it stretched to billy-oh (d’oh!) and was very bulky. It’s on its way be becoming a scarf, and lovely and warm it will be, I’m sure.
Still wanting to be part of the sew-along I hot-footed it to Addicted to Fabric and got this floaty viscose, something a bit more like the type of recommended fabric. It sewed up beautifully. I also found out A2F does have velvet hidden away. So maybe I’ll still get the long black, or maybe blue, velvet skirt I’m dreaming of. I love my Gabriola skirt.
Have you taken part in a sew-along? I’d definitely recommend it. It was great being able to ask questions along the way and just to be part of a ‘community event’. I’ve learnt a lot about size grading, finishing seams, making sharp corners, the right fabrics etc. ha ha. I’m going to join the By Hand London Flora dress sew-along, starting this week (there’s a link to it at the bottom of my blog here, if you’re interested).
Speaking of fabric and By Hand London, how exciting is their latest venture, print on demand fabric!? If you get a chance, have a look at what they’re planning.
