Saunio cardigan made! plus suggestions needed

My first Named pattern and I like it. This is the Saunio cardigan.

Worn here with my linen Sophie dress.

This fabric, has been marinating in the stash for nearly a year. It’s from Alla Moda in Brisbane, what a divine shop! It is a silk taffeta, stitched and sequinned in a large free-wheeling floral pattern. I bought it with no idea what I’d do with it. I think Saunio is perfect for it.wpid-20150906_125211.jpg

I found this a quick and easy make. Mind you I did forget to add the seam allowances. Luckily being over-sized anyway it was ok in the body. The sleeves were another story. I had to add a strip of fabric, dohhh. wpid-wp-1442389231813.jpg

Lucikly the busy fabric hides this when its worn, I hope 🙂

What I like: the simple, modern shape, perfect to show off interesting fabric. A great transeasonal top to throw on over a dress.

Modifications: None, other than forgetting to add the seam allowance, so added a strip of fabric to the under-sleeve.

Fabric: embroidered silk from Alla Moda

Pattern: Saunio cardigan by Named

See also the versions by:

  • Anna and  Kirsty who used the same fabric a month apart!
  • And this traffic stopper, also by Anna
  • Two more by Kirsty here and here ( I love this ocean spray scuba and watched it on the Tessuti website….until it disappeared 😦
  • This cozy one by MaciNic

Have you got a pattern go-to for fabric that speaks for itself?  Do tell.

I bought another small piece of amazing fabric at All Moda – linen and tulle!!!! and even a sequin or two! but what to do with it??? a skirt, a cardi, part of something, what do you think??

Happy sewing all 🙂

  2. This is lovely! and the colors of the jacket and the dress together!
This pattern is very stylish and goes perfectly with this fabric:D
I am drooling over the linen and tuile fabric… this shop seems amazing!…
I would probably make a simple boxy top to showcase the fabric, and I think a
Chanel-inspired cardi jacket would be nice too.

  3. Ooh, I love this cardi, but it might be your fabric that makes it looks so special? I’m not giving advice on what to do with your other gorgeous fabric as I’m hopeless. I wait until the fabric calls to me and then find that it was messing with my head and I’ve wasted it :-P.

  4. Oh both of these fabrics are lovely!
I think for the linen chiffon I would make something for the top half of your body, perhaps a simple jacket but something much more dotted than the Named cardi. Something with process seams perhaps.
Can you play with the fabric so you could remove the overlay for facings and accents etc?
